Amazing units with many pros and cons. Anyone that says anything different is not being fair. There IS competition, however.
I had a RP155 which does more vs. its size although is lower end one. It does not do flawless sims of a dozen amps. However the Twin model can be set up as a nice cleanish preamp in front a power amp that sounds like a good regular amp, and some of the other amp sims made some cool OD or EQ in front of a normal guitar amp. The dirtbox models weren't great, but try its bigmuff into its JCM900 model (no cab), fairly monstrous. You can go DS-1>Acoustic Sim for sick industrial tones. I also had some fun with its looper, although its user interface tries to make it useless. Unlike their Digiverb, you can add some decent reverb without losing apparent level when you switch it on. The worst aspect is some switching latency, it switches patches smooth enough but is almost impossible to do precisely on a beat.

I use a GSP1101, The RP 1000 is basically the same thing with one less chip, no spillover between presets, and a built in foot pedal. I use it live with the control 2. It's the only effects I use. I use the amp models into the effects loop return of a Marshall SLX. I can make it sound perfectly like the SLX preamp and simplify setup and breakdown. I really, really like this series. YMMV.

I have had mine for quite some time now and I'm still finding cool uses for it. For instance, I got this idea from another thread, but I have a patch set up with the amp and cab tone I am digging at the moment. I have the whammy effect enabled. I then have the top row of footswitches enable the pitch. For instance footswitch 6 is -2 semitones, 7 is -1 semitone, 8 is 0, 9 is +1 semitone, and 10 is +2 semitones. Pretty cool to not have to retune the guitar for certain cases.

I have had one for a couple of years. Live, they are really useful if you have to cover a lot of ground. When I use mine, I do not use the amp or cab sims, and use it pedal board mode. I have patches with different modulation and delays. I use the stomp loop to add other mod and delay effects.
The overdrives and distortions are not bad, and the amp sims are pretty good. If you're going straight into the PA, they are useful. You have to spend some time with it to get it where you want it to be. It's easy to program, though. Anyone that says they can't get a good sound out of one either hasn't tried or doesn't know what they're doing.
For recording, they are decent. My POD XT Live beats it for recording hands down.
If you're playing in a cover band, or your sound relies heavily on effects, then you'll probably like it. I keep mine because it's fun.

I have a GSP1101 now but owned the RP500 (and a few other RP units) in the past. In the right hands, killer unit. If you don't like twisting knobs and don't understand EQ, perhaps not for you (despite the RP/GSP being easier to dial in than any other MFX I've tried). Here's a clip recorded direct I recorded back when I had an RP500, 1 preset using just the volume knob to control the amount of gain.

This is also the RP500 recorded direct, a jazzier track. Delay and verb added in post.

I've owned one for a few years now. I got mine primarily for recording and for that purpose it works very well. As with any modeler it takes some time and patience to tweak the settings to achieve the sound that you want. The stock patches sound like crap, but you can get some really great amp sounds of of this thing.
If you're getting one for live work and plan on using the amp/cab sims, I wouldn't plan on switching patches in the middle of the song. There is a little bit of a delay and no spillover as someone has already mentioned. It works great if you just want to keep one amp/cab sim for an entire song and just want to switch certain effects on and off. If you need smooth patch switching capability during songs then you should get the gsp1101 instead.
The effects are really good. Very good delays, verbs, overdrives, etc.. I even like the few wah effects that it has.

i gigged w a rp1000 for a long time, they are pretty darn great.
    pros
can setup patches for each verse, chorus, solo, bridge, etc. so one click and you can really have a much different sound - saves on tap dancing
amp sims are useable or can be bypassed which combined with the large amount of effects and dirt/od/fuzz boxes really gives you a lot of different sounds
4cm makes a big difference with the time based stuff
very easy to learn and tweak on the fly
having a looper is a great practice tool, wasnt usealbe live though
    cons
speaker sims are worthless and all need to be bypassed
i didnt really enjoy the wahs
sound quality is good but not great, most amp sims are a solid 85 - 95% there - if you can live with that it should work well and give you lots of options
overall i liked this unit and it worked really well for while for me. in the end i just wasnt totally satisified with the sound quality and thought i could do better elsewhere so i sold it.

Actually gigging with Rp1000 into EL34 60+60w tube power amp into 2x12 V30 cab. Received many compliments for my tone. Basically JCM800 + tube screamer for hard rythm and leads, twin reverb for cleans. It works great for me and my band, we play mostly vintage hard rock.

they make quality products IMO, easily on par with any other digital company such as line 6, eventide, strymon, etc
the user interface seems daunting to some but its always seemed logical to navigate for me
no real experience with the RP1000 but I've used the previous generations with great success

I didn't find Digitech amp sims to sound like amps, though you could squeeze good sounds out of them, and combine them with tubescreamer etc. The effects were better, like lexicon reverb, tape delay, yaya
